Market Plan Welcomed

Reacting to the publication of Todmorden Market Futures Steering group, local Liberal Democrat Councillors are pleased with the quality of the work done on the “opportunities and challenges” facing the market, the options outlined in the report and the positive and pragmatic approach being proposed.

“The Partnership approach, Option 5, is a brilliant idea,” says Cllr Margareta Holmstedt “and one which I know that the market traders have been interested in for some time.

“As I said in the public meeting on Sunday, we are privileged to have a High Street with no vacant shops, and this is based around the market. If we want to keep a vibrant centre in the town, and public services, it is important that, together, we make sure that the market has a viable future.

“I will be raising this at the next meeting of the Town Council’s Amenities Committee on 5th February because I would like to see the Town Council working closely with Calderdale Council (who own the market) and the market traders to make this a working partnership”.

Cllr Janet Battye echoed Cllr Holmstedt’s enthusiasm for this. “I have already asked for this to be put on the agenda of Calderdale Council’s Todmorden Town Centre Development Board so that it’s discussed at its next meeting in mid-March. This sounds like a sensible and workable way forward”
